This basil ginger gin gimlet has two very powerful aromatic aphrodisiacs. Take your time with this cocktail. Sip it slowly and let its alluring aromas tempt you. Even though this cocktail is shaken, the aromatic aphrodisiacs in it will certainly stir your loins.

    What Is A Gimlet?

A Gimlet is a classic cocktail made with gin, lime juice, and soda water.  It is usually served straight up or on the rocks in a coupe cocktail glass garnished with a lime wedge.

The type of lime juice used varies with taste. Originally, it was made with Rose’s Lime Cordial, which is sweetened. Recently, gimlets have become more tart and favor fresh lime juice instead.

Even though gin gimlets are traditional, a recent surge in vodka gimlets have become trendy. You can change any gin gimlet recipe into a vodka gimlet by just switching the liquor.

    Basil Ginger Gimlet

    Basil Ginger Gin Gimlet Recipe

Traditionally, gin gimlets are made with Navy Strength gin, which is 57% alcohol by volume instead of 40. The navy strength gin isn’t necessary for a good gimlet, but it will definitely give it a stronger gin flavor. This gin gimlet recipe uses simple syrup to sweeten it, instead of Rose’s lime juice. This gives you greater control for how sweet you want your gin gimlet to be. If you want it less sweet, start with half of the simple syrup.

To garnish your gin gimlet, I recommend using a bud of basil and piercing you garnish lime round with it. (pictured above). This will help boost the aromatic impact of the basil.

    Ingredients

    • 1 inch piece of fresh ginger, , peeled and sliced thinly
    • 5-6 large basil leaves
    • 1 lime
    • ½ oz simple syrup
    • 2 ½ oz gin
    • ice

    Instructions

    • Cut the lime in half. Set one half aside and cut the other half into 2 thin rounds.
    • In the bottom of a cocktail shaker, muddle together the ginger, and one round of lime. Add in the basil and muddle until the basil leaves are wilted.
    • Squeeze one half of the lime until it measures .5 oz of lime juice. If the lime half doesn't give you enough juice, juice what you didn’t cut into rounds.
    • Pour the fresh lime juice, simple syrup and gin into the shaker. Fill the shaker with ice and shake until the cocktail is very cold - about 15 seconds.
    • Pour into a chilled coupe cocktail glass and garnish with the other lime round.

    Notes

Pre-chill the cocktail glass by filling it with ice and letting it sit for 5 minutes before use.

What a great post, Mackenzie! Love the combination of basil and ginger, but I had no idea about their aphrodisiac quality. What a beautiful cocktail for Valentine's Day! The Drizly service sounds fantastic too. I'll have to check to see if I'm in one of their delivery zones!

I don't drink gin much because I never know how to use it in a mixed drink. This looks delicious and what a flavor combo!

This is a great way to become a gin lover, Reesa. It's not too strong as to drown out the gin, but not so light as to feel like you're drinking a sanitized hospital room.
